No way.

There was no fucking way.

Cindy didn’t look like she was lying to him, though, and even if she were the type, why would she?

Made no sense.

There was someone in this building right now working for that crazy bird lady?

The very asshole who’d bitten his brother and put him in the medical wing?

Someone Sammy hadn’t told him about?

That pissed him off enough to make the bobcat rear its head.

The only reason why it didn’t was because Cindy trailed behind him, hot on his heels, worry radiating from her.

“What are you doing? Where are you going? They’re not going to let you see him.”

Steve clenched his fists, a low growl working up his throat. “Then why did you tell me about it?”

“I don’t know, maybe I thought we could talk about it? At least come up with a plan… petition Director Cooper to let us speak with him…”

Steve let her trail on while he walked, though he barely knew where he was going, not that he had any idea what he would do when he got there.

Steve had no authority here. He wasn’t an agent or a real student. He was just as much of a guest as Cindy was. Someone who was learning about the shifter world and recovering from what had happened to him.

Christ, even in his normal day-to-day, it wasn’t as if he was a cop or anything. No one who worked an interrogation, not a detective, nothing that would give him a real reason to see the man Cindy had described.

Nothing but his desperate need to get a look at him.

To see the man who had willingly worked for her.

Mother.

Steve made it to the elevator, smacking the button that would open the doors and stepping inside. Cindy followed after him, quickly putting herself into the corner and trying to look small.

He felt bad. He knew this must be freaking her out, but he couldn’t help himself.

“You don’t have to come with me.”

It would be better if she didn’t come with him. Then she wouldn’t have to see when he was told to fuck off by whoever was guarding the man down there.

Cindy shook her head, eyes down. “I was told to stay by you, so I will.”

Steve fought against the swelling of annoyance and tenderness that swirled inside him. He clenched and unclenched his hands.

It took only a few seconds before his body settled on being touched by her words instead of irritated.

“I’m not in any danger of shifting. You don’t have to worry about me or whatever promises you made to Sammy.”

“I didn’t… I wasn’t making any promises for him.”

Steve glanced back at her but then faced forward as the elevator took them to the basement of this place and the doors slid open. He stepped out.

“Well… Whatever the reason, you’re not responsible for me. They’re not even going to let me see him. I just want to—”

Steve stopped himself. He had to. What was he doing?

Whoever that guy was, he would be locked up and have at least one or two men watching over him.
